Project

Genetic Dissection of Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean) Immunity Against Insect Herbivores

I am developing a genetic line of common bean that lacks a key immune receptor called the inceptin receptor. Using a novel high-throughput caterpillar feeding assay, I will measure the defensive consequences of lacking the inceptin receptor.

What I learned

How to organize a long term plant breeding project and how to use molecular techniques to determine plant genotype. I have also learned how to work effectively with collaborators to benefit everyone on the team.

Advice for future applicants

You will never win anything you don’t apply for!
