Overview
The Mary Gates Endowment supports and funds University of Washington undergraduates in pursuing meaningful work through research, leadership, and community-based projects. There are three different types of Mary Gates scholarships, each designed to support various student experiential learning and community engagement activities.
Research Scholarships
Up to $5,000 to support undergraduates doing research under a UW-affiliated faculty mentor, in any field.
Research Scholarships support students who are engaged in — or preparing to begin — research guided by a UW-affiliated faculty member, in any discipline and at any stage of their degree. Mary Gates Research Scholarships provides flexible student funding, up to $5,000 across two quarters, to engage in undergraduate research projects.
Leadership Scholarships
Up to $5,000 to support undergraduates in pursuing a self-developed leadership project that addresses a community need.
Leadership Scholarships support students while carrying out a proposed or current leadership project and the learning and growth expected; it is not a reward for leadership already accomplished. Open to undergraduates from any major and year, it provides flexible student funding up to $5,000 across two quarters.
Community Investment Scholarships
Up to $10,000 for an ambitious, community-partnered project meeting a community-identified need.
Community Investment Scholarships provide up to $10,000 for an ambitious community-based project, carried out in partnership with the community it serves, over three to eight months. Scholarship eligibility is limited to students and recent alumni with a foundation in community-engaged work while at UW, currently limited to Mary Gates Leadership Scholars, CELE program participants, and Leadership Minor students.
