Making Health Equity a Reality: The Role of Health Insurance Navigators in Expanding Healthcare Access for Immigrant Communities in Washington State

My project aims to highlight the experiences and stories of health insurance navigators who work with migrant, refugee, and undocumented communities in Washington State to expand their access to healthcare. Using semi-structured interviews with insurance navigators working in public health departments, community-based organizations, non-profit hospitals, and health clinics across the state, I explored their responsibilities and tasks, the process of enrolling immigrant communities for health insurance, the training and resources that support navigators, and the unique knowledge and skills they develop to support marginalized communities. My research shows how navigators deal with punitive immigration policies, xenophobic political rhetoric, financial uncertainty, cybersecurity concerns, staffing inadequacies, and high demand. This project advances our understanding of the systemic constraints, decision-making processes, and discretionary power that immediately shape access to and use of healthcare, and will inform policies aimed at codifying health equity for immigrant communities.

What I learned

I have been responsible for every component of this project, from conceptualization to research design, data collection, and dissemination. This has allowed me to learn about the entire research process and improved my ability to work independently and stay organized. Additionally, I experienced the power of qualitative research. My research participants challenged existing narratives and my own assumptions about their work, and I had the privilege of sharing their stories and the importance of their work.

Advice for future applicants

Research is not meant to be an isolated experience, so it is crucial that you find a community to support you. This can be your cohort, friends, family, etc. Another piece of advice is to challenge yourself and take risks. Doing research is a special opportunity, so you should strive to make the most of it. Ideally, you should also have people who will push you when needed, so that your project reaches its full potential.
