Project
Texture Perception and Cortical Representation Under Cognitive and Sensory Impairment
Many age-related oral health problems are linked to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, yet the cortical mechanisms driving these orofacial dysfunctions remain poorly understood. My project investigates how brain regions communicate and synchronize under conditions of reduced tactile sensation and cognitive capacity. I use statistical analysis grounded in neurobiological context to examine experimental data and uncover patterns in neural coordination.
What I learned
Conducting research at UW has been one of the most rewarding parts of my undergraduate experience. It’s given me the chance to dive into a field I care deeply about, while also helping me grow in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve learned how to articulate complex ideas clearly, collaborate across disciplines, and stay organized when things get hectic, which are all skills that have become essential in both academic and professional settings.
Advice for future applicants
When it comes to your essay, give yourself enough time to review, revise, and repeat! Sharing my essay with a diverse group of peers and receiving feedback was super helpful for me, as it ensured that I was clearly conveying my motivation and research goals.
