Research Project: Learning Safety from Like Others: Effect of Social Categorization on Vicarious Extinction Learning

Ken’s research interests dovetail nicely with a translational study at the Center of Neuroscience, Neuroendocrinology & Clinical Translation Lab focused on understanding mechanisms of vicarious fear extinction learning in patients with social anxiety disorder. His current project aims to investigate the impact of gender matching on extinction learning, specifically whether gender matching moderates the relationship between Anxiety Group and Extinction. He hopes that findings will highlight a potentially significant moderator to vicarious fear extinction, and that incorporating gender matching to potentiate vicarious extinction learning will provide a mechanistic explanation for enhancing fear extinction recall for patients with social anxiety disorder.

What I learned

This project has reinforced my passion for employing human-centered design in mental health solutions, an approach crucial in developing interventions that are not only effective but also equitable and inclusive. By investigating dynamic biomarkers and sociodemographic factors, my goal is to tailor mental health interventions to be accessible to diverse patient populations, especially in reaching underrepresented and marginalized groups.
