Can We Prevent Traumatic Brain Injury? Effects of Raised Intra-Abdominal Pressure in a Ferret Model
My project uses quantitative immunohistochemistry to examine the neuroprotective effects of increasing intra-abdominal pressure at the time of traumatic brain injury (TBI). This research aims to develop a wearable device to protect the brain, with potential to address gaps in knowledge for TBI research, helping vulnerable populations globally.
What I learned
Through my involvement and engagement with this project, I gained valuable knowledge in neuroscience by broadening my experience with preclinical research models that aim to develop interventions for brain injuries such as TBI. By spearheading a complicated project like this, I experienced the complete process of conducting research, from developing testable hypotheses, to troubleshooting issues while collecting and analyzing data, strengthening my ability to reassess and redirect when challenges arise. Most importantly, as the TBI project is a large animal research project, working with seasoned researchers and fellow undergraduate colleagues helped me develop effective and professional communication and collaboration skills useful in many school and work environments in the future.
Advice for future applicants
I would advise future applicants to emphasize the learning process rather than the final product! Sometimes the results of a project may be unexpected or “less than ideal,” but the experience of conducting the project, gathering and analyzing data, and reflecting on the results is valuable regardless of the outcome. Ultimately, the lessons learned along the way are often more meaningful than the result itself.
