Salt and water regulation of Aedes togoi mosquito larvae developing in different salinities

My research examines osmoregulatory adaptations in Aedes togoi mosquito larvae across freshwater and seawater environments. By analyzing ion transport mechanisms through immunohistochemistry, RNA sequencing, and metabolic assays, the study aims to uncover physiological strategies that allow these salt-tolerant larvae to survive varying salinity, with implications for species distribution and disease transmission.

What I learned

Having this extra time to commit to my project has been incredibly enlightening. It has allowed me to gain a much deeper understanding of my research, not just in terms of the science, but also in how to independently manage and troubleshoot experiments. This experience has taught me to think critically about experimental design, question unexpected results, and refine techniques based on outcomes. I’ve also grown more confident in taking initiative and making decisions in the lab, which has been a huge step in my development as a researcher.

Advice for future applicants

Give yourself plenty of time to work on the essay—it’s not something you want to rush. Don’t get too attached to your first draft; be open to revising your words so your ideas come through more clearly. Most importantly, let your passion shine through. Show why you care about your project and how it excites you.
