3D-Printed Engineered Living Materials for Degradation of Fats, Oils and Grease in Wastewater
I am developing Engineered Living Materials (ELMs) that embed yeast in polymer matrices to break down fats, oils, and grease (FOG) in household wastewater. I create these materials through 3D printing and use microscopy and materials science techniques to optimize their performance. By effectively removing FOG, my project helps prevent fatbergs, which can clog sewage systems and lead to costly repairs, environmental damage, and health risks.
What I learned
So much. To start with, I’ve gained technical lab skills and learned new analytical techniques. Beyond that, I’ve learned how to independently design experiments, analyze data, and drive new directions in my project. Throughout this experience, I’ve grown as both a student and researcher, tying in concepts from class with my lab work and learning how to manage my time effectively to balance school and research. I’ve also learned how to collaborate with others in a lab setting.
Advice for future applicants
Keep pushing through, even when things don’t go as planned. Each attempt in research builds your skills and brings you closer to the solution. You’ll get better with every try, so don’t be discouraged by setbacks. Just keep at it!
