Formatting and feedback
The project essay is a maximum of three pages and the impact essay a maximum of one page, both double-spaced, 12-point font, with 1-inch margins.
The one optional supplemental page for references, images, or figures may be formatted differently as long as it's clear and legible; please give any figure or image a caption. If you refer to a figure, graph, or image that isn't your own, credit the source — missing citations can affect how your application is evaluated. Use the citation style common in your discipline; the UW Libraries Citations Guide and the Odegaard Writing Research Center resources can help. Please don't pad your essay with sources that aren't relevant to your project.
Getting feedback before you submit
A mentor's eye, a non-expert's eye, and the support we offer.
Ask two kinds of readers to review your project essay: your faculty and/or secondary mentor(s), who can speak best to how it represents your research and its larger framework, and someone outside the work/field — a peer, instructor, or adviser — who can tell you whether it reads clearly to an intelligent non-expert and conveys your enthusiasm. Give your readers the prompt and the review criteria and leave yourself enough time to act on their feedback.
You're also welcome to attend an application or feedback workshop — bring a draft, since there's time for peer review and project-specific questions.
