Formatting and feedback
The essay is a maximum of three pages and the impact answer a maximum of one page, both double-spaced, 12-point font, with 1-inch margins.
The one optional supplemental page for references, images, or figures may be formatted differently as long as it's clear and legible; give any figure or image a caption. If you refer to a figure, graph, or image that isn't your own, credit the source — missing citations can affect how your application is evaluated. Use the citation style common in your discipline; the UW Libraries Citations Guide can help. Please include only the sources, figures, and images that are relevant to your project.
Get feedback before you submit
A mentor's eye, an outside reader's eye, and the support we offer.
Ask two kinds of readers to review your essay: your mentor, who can speak best to how it represents your work and its larger framework, and someone outside the project — a peer, instructor, or adviser — who can tell you whether it reads clearly to an outside perspective and conveys your enthusiasm. Give your readers the prompt and the review criteria, and leave yourself enough time to act on their feedback. You're also welcome to attend an application workshop — bring a draft, since there's time for peer review and project-specific questions.
